I am getting one type of question a lot: "What kind of books and other material do I need for study music theory?". For some, the best answer is to find a teacher, but if you are like me, you might want to read a book and do exercises.

Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory

Great starting point.

If you want to learn all the fundamentals of music theory this is your book. It is well written and cover all the knowledge you will probably needed. It is not specific to any instrument.

The piano book for adults

Classic book for learning how to play piano. This is first in 3 books for basic course.

Alfred's Basic Piano Prep Course Lesson Book

The piano book for kids

For those who have small kids, this book would be good starter. It is aimed for kids without any experience and it seems solid. I am going to use this book to teach my daughter when she get a bit older.

Music Theory for Guitarists

The theory book if you play guitar.

Most of the music theory books are very piano centric. If you play guitar (or bass guitar) this book is good study guide.

Instructions on Music Fundamentals

Advanced book for serious study.

If you are looking for some serious study this book might be great for you. It starts on beginner level and level up quickly, covering all the important music building blocks.
